Science Explains How Heavy Metal Vocalists Can Scream Without Hurting Their Throat

Have you ever wondered how heavy metal vocalists can scream on stage (or the studio) for hours at a time, without hurting their voice?

In a recent video by YouTuber Inside Science, the answer was discussed by several scientists, even going back as far as the 9th century, in which an Arabic merchant called Izdebski, who compared heavy metal vocalists with big babies.
“A little baby has all the sounds — it has the sounds of scream and growl, and inhalation and high pitch and whistle and low pitch, and so I thought, wow, you know, all of this we have, we learn from the beginning. We have it and then we somehow lose it, and the patients who suffer can’t learn how to do this,” said Izdebski.
