Green Day Opens Up About New Record’s Lyrical Content & Recording Process

Except for the few rumours that were flying around, no one knew for sure that the guys from Green Day were indeed back in the studio to work on a new album.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, drummer Tre Cool shed some light on why this was the case.
About the studio sessions being top secret, the drummer shared the following:
We didn’t tell anybody that we were recording, except our wives, we gave ourselves enough time and we weren’t watching the clock. [That] took the pressure off.”
In 2012, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong was also struggling with substance abuse, leading to him spending some time in rehab aswell. This was also addressed:
“All those health issues are behind us,” he says. “We’re going into this record cycle with a lot of gratitude, a lot of humility.”
Lead single ‘Bang Bang’ was released a few weeks ago.
Of course there was also some questions about what this track is about, Cool’s answer was the following:
The album’s lead single, “Bang Bang,” is written from the perspective of a mass shooter. “The song is dangerous, and it captures the spirit of the new record, I think the world is ready for big guitars and big drums — and the truth.”
